Some sad tidings at the year's end. I've had an e-mail from David Anfield with the news that his dad Brian had died on Christmas eve in Pembrokeshire. In many ways it was fitting that a proud Welshman should pass away at home.
Brian played for Hutton for many years and was here when I joined the club in the mid-80s. He was a stalwart of the 4th and 5th XIs under Dennis Jones, Frank Wildman and Gerry Anderson. My fondest memory of him is playing at King George’s for Frank’s team - I can’t remember who it was against but he was on 99 having never scored a century. I was umpiring and willing him to smash the next ball. This he duly did only to see it go straight down mid-wicket’s throat. He was gutted. I think he's the only chap who wouldn't have sworn and smashed the stumps over in frustration! He just shrugged and walked off in typical sporting style. I don't think he ever made that century.
Brian was at our annual dinner in December and particularly enjoyed hearing fellow Welshman Robert Croft's speech.
His funeral will be in Wales in the new year with a celebratory service in Brentwood/Hutton in February. Details when we have them.
