Match report The 1st XI maintained their 100% home record in Division 1 this season with an emphatic win over promotion-challengers Belhus on Saturday.

Batting first, Belhus' innings got off to an inauspicious start, losing Joe Joyce - who before Saturday's fixture was averaging close to 70 this season - for a golden duck, caught behind off the bowling of left-arm seamer Jon Mowll. Belhus were soon reduced to 41-3, Tom Patterson picking up two quick wickets from the other end.

On a flat pitch and with a lightning fast outfield, Belhus' Max Osborne (103) and Matt Doran (81) steadied the ship through the middle overs, but some disciplined bowling and excellent fielding kept the run rate down in the latter half of the innings. Highlights included leg-spinner Connor Whetstone's second spell, a stunning boundary catch by Alex Tredgett, and a 10-over marathon by Ed Abel Smith, who was unfortunate to finish without a wicket. Belhus were eventually bowled out for 274, when a score closer to 350 had looked on the cards at the 25-over mark.

Hutton's chase was dominated by Viv Paver, who once again showed his class with the bat. Viv was maturely supported by Jules Whetstone (52), but it was Viv who took centre stage. The Aussie demolished the Belhus bowling attack, blitzing his way to a mammoth 197 from just 108 balls. Viv's innings included 23 fours and 11 sixes, although he had a reprieve early in his innings, being dropped on just 12. When he was eventually dismissed three runs short of a double-century, Hutton were within 15 runs of their target, and cruised to victory with 17 overs to spare.

Viv has now scored three consecutive hundreds for the 1st XI, and has played a central role in extending Hutton's lead at the top of the Division 1 table.

Although acknowledging the undoubted importance of Paver's innings to the win, captain Dan Hagger also highlighted his team's determination in the field and with the ball in hand. "After a perfect start for us, [Belhus] put together a really good partnership...I was really impressed with our bowling through the middle overs, refusing to let them get away from us."

Next weekend, the 1st XI travel to Harold Wood, who sit third in the table, some 62 points behind the league leaders. "I feel we're improving every week", says Dan, "which we know is important if we are to stay top. With 2 away games on the bounce coming up, it's great to have kept our winning streak going."

Many thanks to Georgie Manek and Amy Hills for scoring once again, and the team was pleased to see former overseas and current India A player Hanuma Vihari back watching his old club.
