Hutton cricket club are pleased to announce that the winner of the Essex League's 2022 Andrew Jenner Award is Hutton's very own John Southgate. We have shared his nomination below and offer our congratulations for a thoughoughly well-deserved award!!!
John originally became involved with Hutton as a parent of two promising cricketers and then became a regular member of our 4th and 5th XIs and Over 40s Indoor team.
However, it is through his Herculean efforts off the field that he has become one of the most valued members of the Hutton family.
For the last 15 years John has been our bar and house manager responsible for every aspect of running the bar and pavilion. Since taking on the job as a stand-in, he has taken on responsibility for ordering bar stock, making and receiving deliveries, organising the volunteer rotas, stocktaking, cash reconciliation and waste disposal. Alongside this he arranges and oversees the maintenance of the structure and curtilage of our pavilion often carrying out the repairs himself. His has involved him undertaking many of the unpleasant hygiene related jobs and being called out at night to answer alarm calls He has done this willingly and uncomplainingly.
Through his hard work and sound stewardship he has, almost single-handedly, increased turnover by over 300% and profits by nearly 500%. This has greatly increased the financial stability of Hutton. Working alongside his wife Alison on the social committee he has played a major role in improving the club’s social programme and its attractiveness as a venue for external hirers.
In doing this he has accepted not a penny from the club and insisted that this is a labour of love and his way of putting something back into the game.
He totally fulfils the requirements for the Andrew Jenner award being from the same mould as Jungle putting others before himself and not seeking monetary reward from the club he loves.
