Shenfield v Hutton Cricket Club 3rd Xl on Sat 19 May 2012 at 1.00 pm
Match was Drawn

Match report The monsoon season was finally over as Hutton 3rd team’s campaign began with a potentially feisty encounter away at local rivals Shenfield.
Captain Steve Cotton elected to bowl first on a soft wicket and, with overcast and muggy conditions, looking to take advantage of any swing to be had with the new ball. However Shenfield went after the opening bowlers with some impetus, taking advantage of the short boundary and more than their fair share of luck. The opening partnership wasn’t broken until Shenfield opener Matthew Simmons was caught well behind the wicket by Ed Hawker, off the bowling of James ‘Jonathan Trott’ Mowll; despite this breakthrough, Shenfield’s batting was relentless and the ball was to disappear over the boundary far too many times for Hutton Bowler Will Spire’s liking. Shenfield’s onslaught was eventually halted by the inspired bowling change of Richard Lewis, who produced an invaluable 10 overs 2 for 30; with some already beginning to feel it was going to be his day...
Hutton were set a formidable but not impossible 250 to win and, after a tea break followed by a quick check of certain football scores, were ready to go. Unfortunately, Hutton’s lack of outdoor preparation showed, the top order succumbing to Shenfield’s bowling with Hutton reduced to 24 for 5, including 3 of the top 6 falling for nought. Cue the typical Hutton fight back, James Mowll scoring a resilient 31 before being questionably dismissed. Although Mowll’s effort was to be overlooked by man of the match Richard Lewis’ defiant 99 not out, an innings of such style, it left many onlookers feeling reminiscent of a young Kevin Pietersen as six after six was belted into the trees.
The 3rd team’s resilient effort was in the end a good result, and they could feel proud as they returned to the club that evening as the only Hutton side not to lose; and, with plenty of encouraging signs, there may be hope for success in the coming months.
