Hutton Cricket Club Won by 54 runs

Match report Parry hat-trick secures a last-gasp win.

On Saturday we played Stanford-Le-Hope at Corringham Rec. Behind the bowlers arm at one end was a house having its roof replaced by a man in a red sweater. At the other end the bowler let fly from the background of the pavilion with a red roof. The pavilion has changing rooms for both cricket and the bowling green next door.

The opposition started with 10 men as the vice skipper was off looking for a spare car tyre to replace the one he'd just punctured. The game proceeded in a leisurely fashion and we scored 209 aided by 34 byes. The vice skipper turned up about 40 minutes before tea having got two tyres for £70. He then had a bowl and stood at silly mid-off to a 14 year old slow bowler and was duly hit twice - once on the shins and once on the chest.

On the restart, their first two batsmen hit us all round the ground, scoring 48 in 6 overs before one played on and the other was caught by having a wild slog to leg from a full ball that pitched on off and was moving away from him. He skied the ball so far up into the air that you thought air traffic control should have been alerted. Fortunately the old git behind the stumps raced from behind the stumps to take with a catch he is rather proud of (a diving two handed effort since you asked). A further wicket at the end of the over had meant that 3 wickets had fallen in 7 balls and there looked to be only one team who could win the game once Stanford were reduced to 50-3. They then looked only to save the game and crawled to about 150 for 7 with the last of the 20 overs to go.

By this time the vice skipper had batted and then left early to go to his parents' anniversary party but the Stanford captain was holding the line. He blocked the first three balls of the final over in the approved manner meaning we had to get a hat-trick to win the game. Then the canny bowler induced a rash stroke and he had a wild swipe at the fourth ball and was caught at slip. Dave Parry (53), then bowls number 10 with a jaffa (bowled him through the gate and trimmed the bail of leg stump) and had number 11 caught at silly mid-off for his first ever hat-trick in a 40 year career and we win the game by 60 odd runs.

Earlier Will Steinberg had batted beautifully on a pitch that had deliveries rearing at batsmen from a good length and gave all bowlers assistance throughout the match. Will scored 53 runs in just over two hours showing remarkable application on a pitch where you never were allowed to feel “in.” Will had great help from John Southgate who batted well for 46 and Tim Mason who took the over the responsibility for getting the team to 200 once Will departed. Together with Chris Wilmot,Tim was able to secure maximum batting points with Tim and Chris scoring 28 and 19 not out respectively.
