Match report U15 Dennis Peter’s Trophy – Essex County Cup

Loughton vs. Hutton at Loughton CC Monday July 14th 2014 at 6pm.

This was Hutton’s first such final for 18 years and playing Loughton in their own back yard was always going to be tough.

Hutton won the toss and put the hosts into bat and it looked possibly a wrong decision with Loughton 22-0 in the 4th over before Downing struck with the first wicket to remove the Loughton opener and County batsman. Excellent tight bowling from Downing and Whetstone saw two further wickets, one a piece, and Loughton were in trouble at 33-3 in the 8th.

The change bowlers did an excellent job and tightened the screws with some excellent catches from Tredgett (diving full length), Matt Scammell, Fred and the Hodge and Hutton were all over their hosts at 74 – 8 in the 16th over. Two wickets each for Acheson, Wantling and one from Matt Scammell and Hutton sensed the end was nigh.

Greg Spires playing with stitches in his elbow and cuts and grazes from a bike accident, took a wicket with his first ball and despite a couple of boundaries towards the end the Loughton innings ended with a run out in the final over – Loughton 90 all out – job half done and an excellent bowling and fielding performance from the Hutton boys once again.

We knew that Loughton would not roll over and with two top notch County spinners we knew we had to grind this out early on. As seems to be the norm of late we lost an early wicket, Downing falling in the second over and Hutton were 4-1. The Loughton boys were fired up and rightly so.

Captain Tredgett and Whetstone then dug in and put on an excellent partnership of 68 for the second wicket when the latter was bowled for 19 with the score at 72-2 in the 15th. We wondered if things might be about to take a dramatic turn when Acheson was bowled first ball by the fired-up Ali – 72-3 – however the hat trick did not materialise as Greg saw off the remainder of the over.

Tredgett then set about the other bowler in an attempt to shift the momentum, firstly hitting him through cover point for 4, however was stumped when advancing down the track and the score was now 79-4 in the 16th. This was a really mature innings by the Hutton Captain, who was disappointed not to have reached 50, however there were one or two anxious faces in the crowd now and 91 still seemed a little way away.

However we needn’t have worried as Greg did what he does best and relieved the pressure with a 6 over the bowlers head and then in the next over hit 4 through extra cover to win the match and the cup for Hutton.

A good game played in the right spirit and thanks to Loughton CC for hosting the final.

The boys have really gelled as a team unit this year and winning this competition was well deserved and they now go forward to represent Essex in the National competition.
