Harold Wood v Hutton Cricket Club Womens 1st XI on Sun 22 Aug 2021 at 13:00
Hutton Cricket Club Lost by 2 wickets (with one ball left)

Match report What a thriller this turned out to be! Following plenty of overnight rain the outfield was damp and sensing a bowling day, Harold Wood won the toss and put us into bat. It was a good decision because although we started brightly, it didn't seem easy to score freely and we lost wickets at regular intervals with only Amy H getting above 30 runs. Batting with every other team member she scored an excellent 64, accelerating her innings as she watched the wickets fall at the other end until she was caught in the 32nd over and the innings was ended. Needing 168 off a reduced game of 37 overs our hosts would have been confident of a win - they have amassed some huge scores this season and are unbeaten to date. But we bowled well and, like Hutton, they lost regular wickets and were unable to score big. When the 8th wicket fell and 43 runs were still needed, our hopes of a win were high. The next few nerve wracking overs saw the game tip in the balance first one way and then the other and when 13 runs were still needed off the final two overs, we thought we were home and dry. Sadly, Mel W and Cara T had other ideas and they ran everything, scored unlikely boundaries and eventually reached the target with one ball left. Heartbreak for Hutton but delight for the hosts as evidenced by the huge cheers from the boundary when the winning runs were struck. Captain Amy led from the front today, with her runs, four catches and two wickets but the whole team did us proud and everybody made a contribution whether that was in the field with saved runs, in the middle with scoring runs or frugal bowling with or without wickets.

We finish a very comfortable and creditable 3rd in the league table. It's been a challenging season for all with Covid, weather and university absences but we have done ourselves proud and look forward to next season when we go again and will hope to challenge for the top spot. Well done to the whole squad.
